Somebody should tell the European Union Council that increased visa fees aren't quite the best way to wish the world a happy new year. Yet here we are, with an updated Schengen visa code that just got approved by the EU Council yesterday, June 6th. These changes will see visa applications fees going up 33 percent, from 60 to 80 euro, as of January 2020.
Contrary to how it may appear, the updated code is meant to facilitate the process for frequent Schengen travelers. You can now submit your applications up to a maximum of six months before the trip as opposed to the current maximum period of three months. Also, the EU plans on introducing a harmonized approach to issuing multiple entry visas for regular travelers with a positive history for a period, which increases gradually from one to five years.
